Live Small Raw Squid for Lunch
I was lucky to find some live small raw squid in the Malabon City wet market. I was on my usual trip to buy horse meat then checked out their sea food section. The lady said they had these live and fresh items due to boat men parking on their dock. You can identify if the squid is still alive if the colors on its skin are still changing / rippling. In fishing towns, people have the notion that they should only buy live shellfish, live crabs, live squid… they are not fresh when dead.
The live squid was an enticing offer. I popped one in my mouth and it tasted great. So I bought what was there, just 1.1 kilos left. Got it for 280 pesos. Not cheap.
At home, preparation was:
- Wash with water.
- Get a dipping bowl for real natural vinegar.
- Dip squid a few seconds just to “clean” it due to handling in the market.
- Eat.
- Show your nice black tongue.
- My 5 year old girl found this delicious and fun with me.
I must have eaten around 400 grams of squid until I was full. Just like the other meats I have. Pretty good. If I chance upon live squid again, I will buy it. This method of eating by dipping in vinegar is what the market lady suggested.
