Big Opportunity to Pig Out on Naturally Ripened Mangoes (Baklas, no Kalburo) during the New Year

Happy New Year everyone!  Flash news!  This new year January 3, 2013 while they have not re-stocked in the fruit vendors section in the wet markets is a very very good time to pig out on naturally ripened mangoes.  Here is the scoop for all you mango lovers who may not be so experienced yet.

Have you ever been disappointed with your ripe yellow mango?  Did you know that the naturally ripe mango is not THAT yellow?  The carabao mangoes are green and yellow when ripe.  You look for the SMELL.  It is the sweet ripe smell that is the marker of a ripe carabao mango.  The better smelling, the better tasting.  Smell before you buy.  Smell before you eat.

The reason there is an abundance of naturally ripened mangoes this January 3 is that these fruit shops had left over unripe green mangoes over the new year.  These ripen naturally over the next few days, so now they have no choice but to sell them to you as naturally ripened… they put the sign “Baklas” and “Walang Kalburo” (no gunpowder).

Did you know there is a law against “kalburo”? The vendors should be policed about practicing such a thing.  It poisons the fruits, poisons the consumer, and makes the fruits taste terrible.  They look evenly ripe, but taste not as good.  Like those little mango varieties… they taste horrible with kalburo.

So, enjoy your mangoes, I just bought 3 kilos and I’m pigging out.  Got them between 70 to 80 pesos per kilo from different vendors.   Buy now!  Buy now!  Buy now!
